No easy weekend in ADAC Formula 4

It was everything but an easy weekend in ADAC Formula 4, when they had the season opener at Oschersleben.

37 drivers were ready, but with a weekend with changing weather conditions, the field was already reduced to 36 after practice, when one of the cars had too much accident damage, but thankfully the driver was unharmed.

In the qualifying the field was split into 2 groups, where top 11 from each group were directly qualified for the races. The rest had to go through a qualifying race, where the 13 best drivers would qualify for the rest of the weekend.

Joey Mawson was fastest ahead of Kim Luis Schramm and Jannes Fittje on P3.

Joey Mawson was to be man of the weekend, with 2 victories and a second place moved into a clear lead in the championship. A lot of people had the eyes on a certain Mick Schumacher, but he had a few problems advancing through the field. So it wasn’t until race 3 that he made it to the podium and even won the race.

Mawson’s teammate Moritz Müller-Crepon showed great speed throughout the weekend. With 4th fastest time in qualifying group B and a very good 5th position in race 1, his season could hardly have started better. In Race 2 he was in a battle with Sophia Flörsch for 5th place, but a collision between the 2 led to retirement for both. In race 3 he stalled when the lights went out, so he fell all the way back to P25. But throughout the remaining 16 laps he went all the way up to 15th position. An impressive perfomance in the field with equal cars, where everything is about set-up and driver capabilities. He is on 9th position in the championship.

Dane Nicklas Nielsen also was on the starting grid. With P11 in race 1, 9th in race 2 and 8th in the final heat, he became faster and faster throughout the weekend. He is now positioned 11th in ADAC Formula 4 Powered by Abarth.

Joey Mawson leads the championship ahead of Mick Schumacher and Kim Luis Schramm.

The next round will be held at Sachsenring on April 29th-May 1st.
