Martin Tomczyk has chosen to end his DTM career when this season is over.
The 34 year old German has been driving in the series since 2001 where he started at Audi. Through many seasons he was teammates with Mattias Ekström at Abt Audi until he was degraded in 2011 for team Phoenix Audi, which back then ran a one year-old car. It appeared to be a big slap from Audi – but somehow it turned out to be his best season ever.
If it was because of extra fire in his belly is hard to tell – but he drove better than ever and when the season was over, he was the Champion! Impressive since it was the one year-old car, that really shouldn’t be able to win the Championship.
A few days after his championship win, he threw the bomb, that he would leave Audi and go for BMW instead.
Since then he has been a works driver at BMW and has done DTM and VLN and the 24 hours of Nürburgring for the Bavarian team.
His results hasn’t been that impressive since his change of brand. There has been a few podium visits, but no victory so far.
What the future will bring, only time will tell. He has a lot of experience, with a lot of knowledge of many cars, and a lot of experience at the Nordschleife, that a lot of teams would love to be able to utilize.
