Toyota fastest in FP1 – but only just

Toyota Gazoo Racing #7 was fastest at the first free practice for this weekend’s FIA World Endurance Championship race at Spa Francorchamps.

The team, who can call the Belgium track for home track, with only 130 kilometres between the factory in Cologne and the Spa track, was 0,036 of a second faster than Porsche #2, while Porsche #1 was almost one second slower. That is very interesting, since Toyota TS050 – Hybrid #7 runs the high-downforce bodykit, while the two Porsche 919 Hybrid cars run the low-downforce version. Toyota is running low-downforce on their third car this weekend – the car with number 9 on the side. So that’s an interesting development that we have to follow throughout the weekend.

ByKolles Racing Team #4 was sadly once again very much behind on the laptime. In fact all LMP2 cars, except the TDS Racing #28 which had technical problems, were faster.

Signatech Alpine Matmut #36 was the fastest car in LMP2 ahead of G-Drive Racing #26 and CEFC Manor TRS Racing #25.

In GTE Pro we had Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK #67 fastest ahead of Porsche #91 and Ford #66. Aston Martin was, just like at Silverstone, the slowest cars, but since it was only free practice, we shouldn’t worry too much yet.

In GTE Am we saw Dempsey-Proton Racing #77 as the fastest team, while Gulf Racing UK #86 made it a Porsche 1-2. The winners from Silverstone, Clearwater Racing #61 was third fastest in their Ferrari.

The second free practice will be run today at 16.45 CET.
