Glickenhaus snatched Pole Position ahead of all the big car manufacturers, when the Top 30 qualifying was run this evening for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
Glickenhaus SCG003C #704 with Jeff Westphal surprised all the works teams, among them, Audi.
Land Motorsport #29 with Connor De Phillippi had Pole Position until the final seconds of the qualifying, when the German brand was beaten by the American Privateers in their special build SP-X car.
Audi was going so hard for Pole Position, than the traditional Michelin team chose to dump the French brand for qualifying and instead put Dunlop Tires on all their cars!
The German brand with the 4 rings is not going to like that an SP-X car is beating their SP9 GT3 car, who is meant to be the top class on the circuit with the fastest cars.
The SP-X class is for the cars that don’t fit into other categories. We have the Glickenhaus and the Renault RS01, who doesn’t fit into other classes either.
Audi Sport WRT #9 with Robin Frijns were third quickest ahead of Wochenspiegel Team Monschau Ferrari #22 driven by Jochen Krumbach.
The best Mercedes was Mercedes-AMG Team Black Falcon #3, starting 7th. Right behind them is Porsche in the shape of Manthey Racing #59.
The qualifying was a disappointment for BMW. BMW Team Schnitzer #43 were their best car in 10th position, while second best was Schubert Motorsport GmbH #20 in 17th.
Bentley came 13th with their Bentley Team Abt #38 and was the slowest of all the big brands.
There is the little uncertainty since there is a possibility to adjust BOP before the race, so perhaps it’s the tactic from some of the brands to go slow in the top 30 qualifying, hoping not to get disadvantage in the race.
We will see how it pans out when the race starts 15.30 CET Saturday afternoon.
