Triple collaboration for new IMSA team

Not two but three teams will work together in a brand new team, when the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season starts in one month time at the Daytona 24 Hours.

AFS Racing will work together with PR1 and Mathiasen Motorsports, and will enter the Prototype category with a Ligier JS P217 Gibson LMP2 car.

The team will have Gustavo Yacaman and Sebastian Saavedra behind the wheel for the full season, with one or several drivers still to be announced for the endurance rounds.

PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports was already active in the Prototype category in 2017, with a background in the LMPC category which they left after the 2016 season.

AFS Racing has participated in IndyCar for many years, where they have teamed up with teams like Andretti Green Racing, Sam Schmidt Motorsport, KV Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing and Juncos Racing, but has previous experience from Indy Lights too.

Sebastian Saavedra has been around the team since 2012, but while the one Colombian primarily as experience from single-seaters, the other Colombian, Gustavo Yacaman, already has several seasons behind him in sportscar racing, having raced LMP2 cars in the FIA WEC, ELMS and IMSA.

The team will have Toni Calderon has sporting director, who has plenty of experience from his own racing team, plus being in the same function at the RGR Racing team during their FIA WEC campaign in 2016. So they have a safe pair of hands in that position.

AFS/PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports will have the public debut on 5-7 January at Daytona, when the ROAR test will be run prior to the Daytona 24 Hours on 27-28 January.
