DragonSpeed hires Maldonado

The DragonSpeed team has really turned up their ambitions for the 2018 season.

The team just proved that today, by hiring the former Formula 1 driver Pastor Maldonado.

Maldonado will be driving in the FIA World Endurance Championship in their LMP2 car, which he will be sharing with Roberto Gonzalez and a not yet announced third driver.

The team ran in the European Le Mans Series in 2017 with one car under their own name, while they won the LMP2 Championship under the G-Drive Racing banner. They will have one car entered the ELMS again this year, while they will run in the FIA WEC with a BR1 Gibson LMP1 car plus an ORECA 07 Gibson LMP2 car.

Pastor Maldonado has taken all the way up through the single-seater ranks, where he won the Formula Renault 2.0 Italy back in 2003. He finished third in the 2006 World Series by Renault, before he went on to race in the GP2 Series, which he won in 2010.

Five seasons of racing in Formula 1 for the Williams and Lotus teams followed that, with the highlight being a victory for Williams in Barcelona 2012.

It’s going to be very exciting to follow him and the rest of the DragonSpeed crew throughout the 2018/19 season in the FIA WEC- and to hear who the third driver is. The team has hinted at it will be another big and surprising name.

DragonSpeed and Maldonado will appear in front of the public for the first time, when the Prologue is run at Paul Ricard in two weeks’ time, ahead of the FIA WEC season.
