Marc Márquez surged on to a commanding victory, despite a surprise qualifying which saw rookie Fabio Quartararo on pole and fellow Petronas SRT Yamaha rider Franco Morbidelli in 2nd.
Marquez, from 3rd on the grid, quickly took first position from the start and never looked back. Sadly, Quartararo, who was destined for a podium, ran in the top 3 but then developed a gear linkage issue about half way through the race and was forced to retire, meanwhile Morbidelli stuck at the front for around 60% of the race but seemed to struggle with tyres late on and dropped all the way back to 7th place in the final stages. Álex Rins and Valentino Rossi had poor qualifying sessions which resulted in them starting way down the order, but picked off positions as the race went on to finish 2nd place and 6th place respectively. Meanwhile, Viñales and Dovizioso, who finished 3rd and 4th had very quiet races up until the end when “Desmo Dovi” closed in and looked close enough for a pass but it was not to be.
Overall it was an interesting race, but it was definitely not a classic race that will stand in memory.
Standout performances were Márquez, Rins and Aleix Espargaro but honourable mentions definitely go to Taaka Nakagami and Stefan Bradl who finished 9th and 10th respectively.
