Porsche team pulling out the big guns

When the ADAC GT Masters 2020 season gets going, there will be a new full season team on the grid.

The SSR Performance team enters as Porsche 911 GT3 R, and it’s certainly not Mr Nobody behind that effort.

The team will have technical support from Manthey-Racing, which is owned by Porsche. They are the team running the VLN and the FIA WEC programs for the brand, so you don’t find a Porsche team with more experience than Manthey.

They have chosen to put the three times Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup champion, Michael Ammermüller behind the wheel. Ammermüller has previously competed in the ADAC GT Masters, including claiming a race win.

His teammate will be Christian Engelhart, which a lot of people of late connects with Lamborghini. But the German is actually a Porsche specialist, having raced Carrera Cup and Supercup forever, before getting hired as a Lamborghini works driver in 2017. After three seasons for the Italian brand, he returns to a Porsche, that he knows so well. Engelhart finished second in the 2019 ADAC GT Masters standings, with victories in both Dubai and at Daytona another impressive results on his CV.

The livery choice makes the car very easy to spot on the track – but it will probably be in the first third of the field anyway, with that kind of lineup and knowledge behind the effort.

The team had a single start in the ADAC GT Masters 2019 at Hockenheimring, with Marco Seefried and Matt Campbell behind the wheel.

The ADAC GT Masters 2020 is scheduled to start on the first weekend of August, at either Lausitzring in Germany or Most in the Czech Republic, all depending on the national and international developments of the COVID-19 situation.
