Rene Rast will do the final six races of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship 2019/20 for the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler team.
The German will replace his fellow countryman, Daniel Abt, following Abt getting into troubles during the COVID-19 break.
The Formula E series has held some esports rounds, with Daniel Abt being one of the participants. He did, however, get a professional esports racer to take the wheel at one of the rounds, and race as Abt. Abt explained later on that it was just a joke, that they planned to reveal shortly after. But the scandal already started during the race, with other drivers accusing “Abt” of not being Abt. It quickly escalated, and when Daniel officially was caught for letting another driver race for him, he was immediately suspended by Audi Sport, and shortly after, completely fired from the team.
Rast has been rumoured to take over Abt’s seat for a long time – at least from the upcoming 2020/21 season. The double DTM Champion is without a car in November, since Audi Sport officially will pull out of DTM by the end of the season. But Audi certainly doesn’t wanna lose Rast, so will place him in Formula E next to the former Champion, Lucas Di Grassi.
Rast did a single Formula E race back in 2016, where he did the Berlin ePrix for Team Aguri – the team now known as DS Techeetah.
The six races in Berlin is run at in the former Tempelhof Airport from 5 to 13 August.
