BMW ends Formula E programme

BMW has opted to end their involvement in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship following this upcoming Season 7.

The German car manufacturer has chosen to follow Audi Sport, who announced their departure a few days ago.

BMW has been involved since the very first season, but only became official works team in Season 5. Andretti Autosport has run the team since Day 1.

Maximilian Günther will continue for the team in the 2021 season, while Jake Dennis is the new driver in, not only Formula E, but also at the team, where he replaces Alexander Sims.

BMW has stated, that the reason for departure, is that their engineers no longer can do the developments and innovations within the constraints of the Formula E rules. They will put more focus on putting electric vehicles on the road, rather than competing in this motorsport. They expect to have built one million electric cars at the end of 2021, and 7 million by 2030, with two-thirds of those being all-electric.

Season 7 in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship starts in January 2021 in Santiago, Chile.
