IMSA double at Watkins Glen

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will double their Watkins Glen races for 2021.

The series once again had to cancel their race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, to avoid in and outbound travel to Canada due to the COVID-19 situation.

They have decided to make the decision already, so the teams won’t have to worry about quarantine rules or such, which potentially could make travel difficult.

The replacement will be a double at Watkins Glen near New York for two weeks in a row. Watkins Glen missed out on a 2020 race since the New York area was a hotspot with infected people, and the series wanted to avoid that area of the country.

The 6-hour race will be run on 27 June, while this new 2 hours and 40 minutes race will be run on Friday 2 July. While the 6 hours race is an afternoon race, the WeatherTech 240 At The Glen will be an evening race, starting at 18.00 local time. Approximately half the race will run after sunset.

All five IMSA categories will compete at the race – DPi, LMP2, LMP3, GTLM, and GTD.

The series hopes to return to CTMP in Canada for 2022, after having to miss both the 2020 and 2021 editions due to COVID-19.

The next round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be run on 16 May at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
