Vasser Sullivan has confirmed an entry into the brand new GTD Pro category in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship 2022 with a Lexus.
The team has been active with Lexus since 2019, where they have raced with two cars in the GTD category.
The new GTD Pro category is a replacement for the GTLM category, with the teams being able to choose whatever level of drivers that they want.
Car #14 will move into the new category. Jack Hawksworth will run another season for the team, while Ben Barnicoat is the new man in the yellow and black colours. Kyle Kirkwood will once again help out at the four Michelin Endurance Cup rounds.
Barnicoat has been McLaren works driver for the past five years, but announced last week, that he would finish in that role. The British driver has a lot of experience from GT racing, but has also been active in the LMP2 category in prototype racing.
Kirkwood will also be doing the NTT IndyCar Series in 2022, so that prevented him from becoming a full-season driver. There could still be some difficulties regarding the 12 Hours of Sebring, since there is an Indycar race at Texas Motor Speedway on the same weekend. But there are several drivers in that situation, so there will probably be a private jet heading from Sebring to Texas.
The team is currently testing at Daytona International Speedway, where several teams are running, with more or less announced programmes.
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship 2022 starts at the same venue on 29-30 January.
