Corvette with an extra car at Daytona

Corvette Racing will enter an additional car at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2022.

The team previously announced just a single C8.R entry to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2022, but has doubled that to two at the opening race of the GTD Pro category.

Car #4 will be driven by Tommy Milner and Nicky Tandy, with Marco Sørensen being the new addition to the team. The Dane has previously raced at Daytona in 2017 with Aston Martin.

31-year-old Sørensen has been connected to Aston Martin for many years, and winning two titles in the FIA World Endurance Championship in GTE Pro, with the 2019/20 title being an official World Championship title.

The GTD Pro category is a new category in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and will replace the GTLM category. The cars are GT3, but since Corvette only recently launched their C8.R in GTLM/GTE spec, and currently doesn’t have a GT3 car, they have been given a waiver to race, with some modifications to the car. Amongst other things, they have been allowed to put ABS on the car, which actually already has been tested in race-like conditions in Detroit earlier this year, since that particular GTLM round was a non-points round anyway.

The second car of the team will be driven by the defending IMSA champions Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia, with their regular third driver Nicky Catsburg.

The regular third driver of car #4, Alexander Sims, will be racing Formula E in Saudi Arabia on the same weekend as the Daytona race. So it appears to be a one-off for Marco Sørensen at Corvette Racing, at least for now.

There will be a test prior to the 24 hours race at Daytona International Speedway from 21-23 January, with the 24 hours race itself being run the following weekend.
