Belgian substitute at Sebring

Meyer Shank Racing has found their replacement at the 12 hours race at Sebring next month.

Stoffel Vandoorne will replace Helio Castroneves, who will be doing the NTT IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on the same weekend.

This will be the first time for Vandoorne to race an Acura DPi car, but he does have experience from LMP2, which he raced in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2021.

Castroneves was actually meant to do the four Michelin Endurance Cup races in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, but those plans were disrupted by the Indycar schedule.

Oliver Jarvis and Tom Blomqvist are the two full-season drivers at Meyer Shank Racing. Blomqvist and Vandoorne were teammates last year in the FIA WEC at JOTA, so they already have a common base there, to build on.

Vandoorne had a test for the MSR team a couple of weeks ago, but that was an Indycar test. Vandoorne is currently racing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, where he races for Mercedes Benz-EQ.

The 2022 season started in the most perfect way for Meyer Shank Racing, by winning the opening round at Daytona, where Simon Pagenaud, Castroneves, Blomqvist and Jarvis to victory. Pagenaud will also be racing in Texas, so wasn’t an option for Sebring.

The 70th edition of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring will be run on 19 March 2022.
