GMB Motorsport has big plans for their 2023 season.
The Danish outfit won an automatic invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, by winning the Michelin Le Mans Cup title with their Honda NSX GT3.
The team has bought an Aston Martin GTE car, which they are going to run in the 2023 European Le Mans Series.
Kasper H. Jensen, Gustav Birch and Jens Reno Møller will be driving the Aston Martin Vantage. All three drivers were part of the Michelin Le Mans Cup for the team during the 2022 season, where Kasper H. won the title alongside Kristian Poulsen. They had hoped for Poulsen to remain Bronze rated driver, but the FIA has chosen to upgrade him to silver for 2023, so the combination Kasper H., Birch and Poulsen wouldn’t be possible, since a Bronze-rated driver is demanded in the car.
This will be the Le Mans debut for Birch and Kasper H., while Møller already has competed at Le Mans twice. That is however all the way back in 2004 and 2006, when he raced in the LMP1 category with a Lister Storm. The first outing was with John Nielsen and Casper Elgaard, while the second run was with Nicolas Kiesa and Gavin Pickering.
Casper Elgaard is the team boss of GMB Motorsport, and he has an Aston Martin connection himself. He finished third with the Larbre team in 2007, onboard a green AMR car, and at his previous job at Massive Motorsport, he was running manager in a GT3 car of the very same brand – alongside Kristian Poulsen, by the way.
The team had a very successful 2022. Not only did they win the GT3 championship in the Michelin Le Mans Cup, but they also won the TCR Denmark with Kasper H. Jensen, finished fifth with Gustav Birch – won the Yokohama SuperCup with Simon Birch, with Simon Seiersen finishing third. And last but not least, Malthe Ebdrup and Magnus K. Jensen 1-2 in the Rookiestandings in the Yokohama 1600 Challenge. And the team finished 1-2-3 in the Rotax Max Challenge, with Andreas Kjellerup as Danish Champion, ahead of Mathias Kjellerup and Kristian Sejersen in second and third.
The European Le Mans Series 2023 starts at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with two test days on 18-19 April, while the first race of the season will be on Sunday 23 April.
