Ford enters LMDh

Ford Performance has send out a press release, confirming that they are the next car manufacturer to enter the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2027, with a Hypercar programme.

The car will be build according to the LMDh regulations, with a base chassis, which is not yet announced, while Ford have their own input on the work regarding aerodynamic and the engine of the car.

They will become the fifteenth car manufacturer, who can compete in the united Hypercar category, which is a mix of LMH cars (cars build from scratch by the manufacturer themselves) and LMDh cars, which have either Dallara, Ligier, Multimatic or ORECA as a base.

There are 7 LMH constructors so far – Toyota, Glickenhaus, Peugeot, Ferrari, Vanwall, Isotta Fraschini, and Aston Martin, while Ford is the 8th confirmed manufacturer with the LMDh rule set. Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Porsche, Alpine, and Lamborghini are already active, while Genesis, who is part of Hyundai, will be entering the FIA WEC in 2026 and IMSA in 2027.

Today’s announcement only confirms a FIA WEC entry in 2027, while there is no date set for a potential entry to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Ford has previously been active in the top category in IMSA, where they supplied engines up to and including 2016 with the Daytona Prototype cars. They didn’t go for the DPi regulations, which started in 2017, bud they ran a GTE programme with the Ford GT instead, competing in both the FIA WEC and IMSA from 2016 until 2019/20. They took a break from 2020 until 2024, where the Ford Mustang was entered in GT3 spec, which currently competing in both IMSA and FIA WEC, with more and more cars slowly floating into other GT3 based championships around the world.

Both the current Mustang and the previous Ford GT waas developed in collaboration with Multimatic, but that doesn’t mean that they are a shoo-in for the LMDh programme.
