Jensen new McLaren driver

Mikkel Jensen has been confirmed as an official McLaren United AS driver, in their upcoming Hypercar programme.

The 31-year-old Dane is the first driver confirmed for the British marque, and will be doing the development of the Hypercar, that will race in the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2027.

Jensen has previous had a similar role at Peugeot TotalEnergies, where he was part of the development of their 9X8 Hypercar in 2021 and 2022, moving into a racing programme with them up until the season finale in 2025.

When Peugeot announced his departure, and United Autosports subsequently announced Jensen as their new LMP2 driver in the Asian Le Mans Series and the 24 hours race in Daytona, the rumors ran very fast, that there was even more to that announcement. But it’s not until today, that he is actual confirmed as a McLaren driver.

United Autosports will run the FIA WEC programme, and the upcoming tests, in a close collaboration with McLaren Racing.

Mikkel Jensen has, despite his young age, been racing sportscars in almost ten years. He was racing LMP3 in the European Le Mans Series for several years, parallel to a GT programme at BMW. That turned into a LMP2 programme in both ELMS and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with several wins and championship titles.

McLaren United AS has so far only confirmed a two-car programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2027, but with the common LMDh regulations in both FIA WEC and IMSA, there is a chance for the car to participate from 2028 onwards. The category, which is called Hypercar in the FIA WEC and GTP in IMSA, is currently confirmed until the end of 2032.
