Zelger: “It’s very tough, but very nice”

Johannes Zelger is one of the new names in the FIA World Endurance Championship 2026, competing with Iron Lynx Mercedes #79 in the LMGT3 category.

Racing24-7-net caught up with thim following the Qualifying at Spa Francorchamps, to hear a bit more about him and his racing.

You decided to take a step into the WEC this year. Was that to get a new challenge?

“It’s very tough, but very nice. I mean, it’s a totally different championship compared to what I did before. I’m quite new at racing as well, because I started five years ago, so it’s a fast growing and I’m happy. It’s super championship, and I’ll see if this time is better than Imola. And so we keep on growing through the year, and we will see.”

What other cars did you drive in the past?

“Was always Porsche. The first one was a Lotus Cup, the small one with the Elise. And then I switched to the Cup car, Porsche and GT3 Porsche. I am racing with both this year, but it’s different championship. But this one is, I mean, it types a little bit more amateur drivers, maybe because it’s more balanced as a car, the Mercedes. Yeah, I’m quite confident with this car, so I’m happy.”

And the first two tracks you already know. You’ve never been to Le Mans before, correct?

“No, just on the simulator, and seems completely different from any other track. We have this long straight, so maybe even managing the temperature, brakes, tires will be not easy, depending on the weather. But yeah, I’m curious to see how it is, and I can’t wait to race there, because it’s THE RACE. So it’s just to be there, it’s a goal, and then see where what we can do, we achieve. But no pressure, just enjoying it. And we will see.”

Iron Lynx Mercedes #79 with Johannes Zegler, Matteo Cressoni, and Lin Hodenius will start today’s race at Spa Francorchamps from 16th in the LMGT3 category.
