GEAR Racing Grasser is a brand new name in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship 2020.
Girl Empowerment Around Racing (GEAR) is a new project, that has teamed up with Grasser Racing Team, which are very well known for running Lamborghinis all over the world. Grasser is a previous winner of the Daytona 24 Hours, and has participated in other Michelin Endurance Cup rounds in the IMSA series for the last few years.
This will be a full season programme in the IMSA championship, with the plan to promote women in motorsport. They have chosen two very well known female racing drivers for that task.
Christina Nielsen and Katherine Legge will share a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO in the GTD category. Nielsen won the GTD Championship in both 2016 and 2017, while Legge nearly won it in 2018, but she ended up second. The pair shared the Heinricher Racing entry for the majority of 2019, but since the deal came together very late for Nielsen, she already had other commitments, with those plans having first priority in case of date clashes. The pair were often running right outside the podium spots, but didn’t quite manage the final jump to get on the podium in their Acura NSX GT3 EVO.
It’s still unclear if the Henricher Racing programme will continue with a new pair of female drivers, or if the programme, which was run in collaboration with Meyer Shank Racing, will shut down for now.
The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship starts on 3-5 January 2020 with testing at the Daytona International Speedway, before the 24 hours race runs three weeks later. By the way – a third and perhaps fourth driver will be needed for that race, but haven’t been named yet.
