Daniel Abt will, in fact, be on the starting grid at home turf in Berlin, when the ABB FIA Formula E Championship goes to Germany.
The 27-year-old German racing driver was fired by Audi Sport about a month ago, and has since then been replaced by Rene Rast.
Abt will instead be racing for NIO 333 Formula E Team, where he will replace Ma Qinghua.
According to the team, there are various reasons for the Chinese driver not to be present in Berlin – including the ongoing COVID-19 situation, which makes his travels into Europe difficult. But it’s no secret, that he hasn’t given much to the team, other than being a Chinese driver at a Chinese team. The results simply haven’t been there, despite him competing for several seasons on/off. If this is a final goodbye to Formula E for Ma is still to be seen.
Abt, on the other hand, has proven his worth. He is a previous winner of the race in Berlin, and is one of only four drivers, who has participated in all Formula E races to date.
The contact is just for the 6 races in Berlin, which will be run on 5 to 13 August, and then we have to see what the future brings for Daniel Abt. Oliver Turvey will be racing the other NIO 333 car in Berlin.
