Changes at Whelen Engineering in 2024

Whelen Engineering Cadillac #31 has made some changes to their driver line-up for the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

The team has opted to swap Alexander Sims in the full-time seat with Jack Aitken, who has been their endurance driver this year.

Sims will be moving back to Corvette Racing, for which he has raced for in the past.

Pipo Derani, Sims, and Aitken won the 12 Hours of Sebring in March this year, but haven’t had the best results this year otherwise. Having said that, we currently have Derani and Sims sitting seconds in the Championship standings, only 14 points from the leading Konica Minolta Wayne Taylor Racing Acura #10.

The absolute low point of the season was probably the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which was the first time the team was invited to. Aitken took the start of the race in very tricky conditions, with rain on half of the circuit. The first time they came down the Mulsanne Straight, the British-Korean driver put the car hard in the barrier, and had to limp back to the pits on three wheels only, with a long repair job for the mechanics. But that hasn’t given him enough discredit with the team.

He was a test driver for Williams F1 Team in the past, but turned his attention to sportscar racing, when the F1 opportunities didn’t evolve.

The team will announce their endurance driver for the Cadillac V-Series.R race car at a later stage.
